About our Instrumental Techniques for Oil and Gas Exploration and Production students

The "LP IEEP" (Licence professionnelle Instrumentation pour l’exploration et l’exploitation pétrolières) is a 3-year undergraduate degree specialising in sensing and instrumentation Technologies for the Exploration and Production sector of the Oil & Gas Industry. It is equivalent in content and level to a B.Eng or a Professional Grade. Students are required to attend a wide range of courses in specialised technological fields. The bias is on practical work.

This LP is the only one in France. A large part of the courses and lectures (30%) is delivered by professionals and experts originating from various reputable international companies or organisations involved in E&P activities such as Geoservices, CGG Veritas, Saltel Industries, Total Professeurs Associés, Total E&P...

The student applications received from for the LP IEEP are screened by a panel of professors and professionals from the industry that examines the candidate's CV as well as his motivation, personality and ability to be conversant in English.

The diploma is delivered upon review and examination of the student's academic performances while attending the course, but even more on the knowledge, abilities, skills, dedication and behaviour (safety) demonstrated during their placement.

The students are trained and educated to become Managers strongly knowledgeable in field operations to work in oil & gas sites or projects in Instrumentation (design, implementation and monitoring of control tools and systems) for wells and production sites.

Here are some possible positions and responsibilities :

  • Mud Logger
  • Control room supervisor
  • Production engineer
  • Electric logger
  • Field production supervisor
  • Production panel supervisor
  • Control system engineer
  • Discipline Leader
  • Safety engineer

The student can also hold similar position in the downstream activities of Oil & Gas such as Refinery or Petrochemicals and quickly evolve towards higher responsibilities.

Our students specialize in Instrumentation and Data Acquisition and Processing for the Hydrocarbons Production and the new  Drilling/Completion Processes with :

  • strong knowledge in Geosciences (geology, geophysics and reservoirs)
  • good linguistic abilities in English
  • proven ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and new challenges
  • geographical mobility worldwide
  • team working spirit in multicultural environment

  • Acoustics (Architectonic acoustics, Noise characterisation, Seismic exploration)
  • Electronics - Electrotechnique (Analogical and numerical electronics, Power electronics)
  • Mathematics and signal processing (Fourier series and Fourier transform,Convolution, correlation, cross-correlation of a signal with itself, Sampling, Digital signal processing and filtering (notions))
  • Hydraulics and fluid mechanics (Incompressible fluid dynamics, Real fluids, Pumping network systems)
  • Mechanics and material science (Vibratory Mechanics, Strength of materials, Corrosion
  • Oil geology (Hydrocarbon Genesis, Storage within sediments, Exploration – Prospecting methods)
  • Geophysics (Log Tools (Facies interpretation and Log correlations), Geophysics data acquisition and treatment)
  • Geology (Tectonic structures, Sediment areas and systems, ), Rock properties
  • Chemistry (Hydrocarbons in crude oil, Spectroscopic and separative analysis methods)
  • Hygienics and security (International standards)

Objectives :

  • to get a first work experience in a company,
  • to apply the knowledge and skills learnt
  • to develop new skills
  • to test the student's ability to adapt to his future working environment

Note : The content of the LP IEEP courses is regularly discussed and reviewed by a panel of professors, professional of the Industry and external personalities in order to adapt efficiently to the requirements and to the new technological challenges.

There is no obligation on your part, even though it would be greatly appreciated… Alternatively, you could also decide to pay him/her on merit, at the end of the placement, or provide some help towards accommodation and food.
Our students are allowed to apply for grants through our university which could help cover their living costs. In order to apply for those grants, they will need a copy of the Training Agreement, which is why we usually insist on your sending us this agreement as early as possible.

The placement lasts from early March to the beginning of July.

Once you have agreed to taking a student on a placement, perhaps following a telephone interview, you will be sent a Training Agreement by the university. This agreement will contain the following information :

  • the student's name and details as well as the company's name and address
  • the name of our university
  • the name of the degree
  • the name of a supervisor in the company and at the university with a possible topic
  • the dates of the placement/internship
  • the obligation for the student to have his own insurance
  • the obligation for the student of writing a final report
